Old fashioned hard candy

hard_candyRelive those sweet memories of the good old days, as many of us recall sweet memories of cutting this hard candy into different shapes with our grandmother and mother. I remember this old-time candy, so famous in the early era of the preceding century, due to its multiple charismas.

The unique flavors of this candy stick lasts for a long time in your tongue. The beauty of this candy stick is that- the more you lick, the more you become addicted to its taste. In addition, it is very attractive and a simple treat you can prepare with few inexpensive ingredients. Prepare it at your home and perk up the memories of your early days as well as your grandparents!

Ingredients:
3/4 cup hot water
Light corn syrup- 2/3 cup
2 cups white sugar
Flavoring of one’s choice

  • In a pan, pour ¾ cup hot water, 2/3 cup light corn syrup and 2 cups white sugar. A small pan is greatly advised for this step in order to facilitate the bulb of the candy thermometer to completely submerge in the mixture.
  • Take a large saucepan, mix corn syrup, water and sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved over moderate heat for about 5-10 minutes. Allow the mixture to come to a boil for another 5 minutes.
  • When the mixture reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit, add food flavoring and coloring.
  • Carefully watch the thermometer and once it reaches 300 degrees Fahrenheit, remove the mixture or else it will burn.
  • Pour the mixture on top of a greased cookie sheet. Spread the mixture around the sheet and allow it to cool.
  • After the sheet cools, cut it into pieces and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
