Have pork without the meat - Percy Pig

percyA lot popular in UK and the rest of Europe, Percy Pig is a raspberry flavored candy made exclusively for Marks and Spencer which now owns its trademark. Percy the Pig has gained lots of popularity lately with its inclusion in one of Vogue magazines’ feature as well as a popular blog. It is now dubbed as the world’s most popular pig shaped candy.

The Percy Pig sweets (candies are known as sweets in the UK) were introduced in 1995 with strawberry and raspberry as the introductory flavors.  From then on newer flavors like cola, grape and lemon have been added to the list. The pigs contain 3.5% real fruit extracts from fruits like apples and oranges which means that having 100g of these fills one fifth of your daily needed portion.

One of the peculiar factors that make it such a popular candy is that this confectionery contains actual pig! The gelatin used in its production is directly extracted from pigs. Leave it to the English to work in pork even in candies.

Percy Pig come in real-like pig face shape which has a pink foam (chewy candy that looks like pink gum) face with dark pink/red colored jelly ears. There are other variations of Percy Pig available as well like the Percy Piglets, Phizzy Pig Tails and Reversy Percys.

Percy Pigs are available only at Marks and Spencer. In other countries there are Percy Pigs – like candies available as well. For example in Canada they have ‘Juiced Up’, ‘Petit Cochon’ in France and in Australia they are available as ‘Peggy pig and pals’.

Many a celebrities are fans of these ‘pigs’ , especially those in Europe and Percy Pig also has a Facebook fan page that has close to 250,000 fans. Percy Pig’s popularity has grown manifolds since it was featured in Vogue’s   ‘What’s Hot’ list at number 11 (out of 40) in 2008. Its popularity has also increased since its regular inception in Suzi Brent’s Nee Naaw blog about the busy life at London Ambulance Service.
