Atomic Fireball wouldn’t have become such a popular candy had it not been for its weird, spicy cinnamon flavor and Jelly Belly Jelly Beans most probably wouldn’t have sold so many of their beans if they had just a few flavors. So when it comes to candies, the candies popularity factor might as well boil down to one parameter – flavor. Let’s have a look at some of the popular candy flavors. Fruit Flavors: In the world of candies, fruit flavors are the kings. Major share of the candy flavors are taken up by these fruit flavors. Fruit flavors (and even fruit extracts) have been used in candy since a long time. Some of the popular fruit flavors would be blue raspberry, orange, grape, watermelon, cherry, blueberry, banana, lemon and strawberry. Caramel: Although caramel is a substance made by heating sugar, the flavor of caramel has become a lot popular since the introduction of modern candy. The smooth, creamy, rich flavor can be irresistible to some. The flavor is widely used in candies as well as other confections. Werther’s Original is one of the popular caramel candies. Spicy Flavors: Candies are no more just about sweet confectioneries. Spicy flavors such as cinnamon, anise and even pepper are a lot popular in candies these days. These flavors pack that extra tickle for the taste buds and can be really fun for first timers. Atomic Fireballs, Jelly Belly’s Sizzling Cinnamon, Chilli Pops are just a few examples of spicy candies. Butter &Peanut Butter: The first thought of butter as a flavor feels weird, but it is when you have a butter flavored candy that you acknowledge its richness as a flavor. Even more, the flavors like butterscotch tantalize and tempt us with their rich buttery qualities. The popularity of Butterfinger is an example of this. Honey: Honey, which spelled the advent of candies, is still one of the most desired flavors. Honees Honey Candy is one example of such candies adorned by many. Licorice: Licorice is another popular flavor when it comes to candies. In UK ‘liquorice’ candies contain licorice extract for the flavoring as well. Black licorice candies area classic and come with all sorts of combinations like chewing gums, sticks or mints. Mint: Mint flavored candy has been a preferred candy as a ‘breath freshener’ since it gives a cool and refreshing appeal. Mint flavored candies contain peppermint or spearmint (or their oils) as the flavoring agent and the strength of these candies is determined by the agent’s quantity. For example, Dentyne’s Ice Arctic Chill gum is so strong, that it is almost spicy. The candies mostly come as hard mints like the popular Tic Tacs. Cola and Root Beer: Cola and Root Beer candies may sound like legacy candies, candies that you ate as kids, but the flavors are still in vogue. Almost everyone loves their root beer barrels, or has at least munched on the Haribo Gummi Cola Bottles; and they will agree that these are still one of their favorite flavors. Sour Flavor: Introduced a few decades ago, sour flavored candy has grown quite a lot in popularity. These candies can contain just mild flavors or can pack a serious sour punch. Sour Punch Twists and Lemon Heads are some of the popular sour candies. Liquor Flavor: Lately liquor flavored candies have been catching on in the candy domain. Butter Rum, Pina Colada, Margarita and even the famous Tequila flavors which mostly come in hard candy form are soon becoming people’s favorites. Candy companies keep experimenting with flavors on a regular scale and sometimes come up with wacky flavors. If well received, the flavors slowly make their way to become some of the popular flavors or even generic flavors. |
